Old MacDonald pop-up book in Children's Storytime Reference starts things right.  Make sure the moms sing along.
Moo by David LaRochelle has exactly two words -- but what great two words! 
Horseplay! by Karma Wilson.  What are those horses doing all night? Not sleeping, that's for sure!
Old Mikamba Had a Farm by Rachel Isadora is about a game preserve in Africa. I love teaching the idea of farms being something besides acreage in the US. Besides, its nice to read a book for this storyhour theme that isn't all mooing and quacking -- lots of lions roaring! The kids were so wiggly I just talked about farms and showed a few pages.
Going to Sleep on the Farm  by Lewison I picked this out because it's very short but has a little nice information about how animals sleep -- standing up, lying down, cuddling like piggies, etc.  The kids had kind of lost it by this time, however.
Dinosaur Farm by Frann Preston-Gannon.  A must.

The Cow That Went Oink by Bernard Most is about a cow who needs to learn to moo and a pig who doesn't know how to oink.  They get together; again, a great chance to make noise.


Minerva Louise by Janet Morgan Stoeke  is not a very smart chicken, but the kids find her booboos hilarious. It's a good book for engaging readers -- everytime Minerva Louise makes a mistake, you can make your astonished face at the kids. Like how can even a chicken be so confused. 






On the Farm by David Elliott is illustrated with wonderful woodcuts that immediately catch your eye and draw you in. The real miracle for me is that the book is composed of short poems written about each of the farm animals. Now I love readaloud books that jingle and rhyme, but I usually steer of true poetry for the kids. But these short, fun verses are an enrichment that evoke the animals brilliantly. A real addition to the language.

Tractor by Craig Brown is simple and beautifully written about farm machinery.

Mandy Archer's Driving Series has four books and the kids love them.  Action packed, these animal drivers are always there for every emergency. Just like we like to be. 

Next time: Gobble Gobble MOOO Tractor Book by Jez Alborough. Kinda perfect: farm animals imitating tractor noises.

Books   Wide-Mouthed Frog by Keith Faulkner.  Great opener & great readaloud! Carson fell over backwards! Try to gurgle the r in "frog" and don't forget to pinch up your mouth at the end for the alligator encounter.  I Don't Want to Be a Frog  by Dev Petty. Little Froggie is complaining bitterly to Froggie Dad about being a wet, slimy creature instead of an owl, say, or maybe a pig.  Until they bump into a wolf.... Ribbit by Folgueira,.  99 Tadpoles by Ken Kimura.  It gripped us! They were a bit wiggly today, so I told them the story of the Turtle Who Flew below Big Frog Can't Fit  In by Mo Willems. The sheer engineering genius of this book makes up for its underwhelming story. Try pushing the sad big frog/good friends angle. Little Quack's New Friend by Lauren Thompson I held up two turtle puppets and showed them the cracks on their backs. What separates the grownups from the babies? Naptime. They don't want to shut their eyes and we look for any excuse. Hundreds of children's books have been written with the idea of lulling the child to sleep, of persuading him by the end of the story that the day is over. But let's start our storytime off with something more fun. Eric Litwin does it again, giving us a bedtime book in perfect sing song rhyme about those nuts who don't want to go to bed. When children come back later and ask for a book, you know it's great! Getting Ready for Bed: There's a Nightmare in My Closet by Mercer Mayer. Night time fears? We've all got them. Getting Ready for Bed:   Don't Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late! Also, Pigeon Needs a Bath ("I Do Not!") by Mo Willems Nobody fights harder than the pigeon. How Do Dinosaurs Say Good Night by Jane Yolen. :   Games Magic Envelope time!   This is when I used the wonderful Magic Envelope I had all the ingredients on the blackboard and told them we were going to make a pirate, what would we need? Would we need a flower? They caught on very fast, great involvement. (Thanks so much,  Sharon Hrycewic  pronounced Rice-Witts for sharing  at http://storytime.readingchick.com/ !) Books Superhero Me! by Karen Katz. This cute little board book was a good start for the theme. Are We There Yet by Dan Santat. Perfect. Tiger in My Soup by Kashmira Sheth.  Also perfect. Sea & Rex by Molly Idle.  Cute trip to the beach w. friendly dino in tow. Good Thing You're Not an Octopus by Julie Markes kept everyone interested, puzzling over what life would be like with 200 teeth or twelve feet. Pirates Don't Take Baths by John Segal. I started losing them here. Even the good listeners weren't very sympathetic to this tale. This year I tried  Come Away from the Water, Shirley by John Burningh
